Specified Quantities for Bread: Pre-packed and Non-pre-packed.

 1st Dec 2009

Pre-Packed Loaves.

The weight of bread, as one of the staple diet foods, has been regulated in the UK for centuries. Until the Second World War bread was required to be made up in sizes of 1lb or a multiple of 1lb, however due to rationing and food shortages during the war bakers were allowed to reduce the weight to 14 ozs or a multiple of 14ozs, and that situation continued long after the war. As a result of "metrication" the prescribed weight for loaves was modified to 400g or a multiple of 400g with bread in quantities of less than 300g being exempted. That continued until 11 April 2009.

Unwrapped Bread.

Directive 2007/45/EC and the Regulations mentioned above only apply to pre-packaged products, including bread, but there is a very large market for unwrapped bread, especially from specialist bakeries and in-store bakeries. For these bakeries the old legislation, requiring loaves to be of 400g or a multiple, still continues. However, the Government has consulted on a proposal to amend the law to remove the requirement for fixed sizes, and has recently announced the result of that consultation.
