The government’s push to cut red tape is a good and positive policy, but care must be taken not to cut legislation that protects consumers across the country.
One area of legislation recently cut that you may not have considered important is the checking of weighing devices, but these laws are vital if, for example, you want to be sure that you are getting the weight of goods that is printed on the package.

Lobbying to Protect your Industry and your Businesses
At the recent AGM the federation discussed our concerns relating to the removal of vital legislation in our industry under the governments “Red Tape Challenge”. The first of these changes we are facing is the removal legislation for the control of test weights and seeing it replaced with guidance notes, despite the UKWF and the Trading Standards Institute believing revocation would be detrimental to all stakeholders, after consultation the government dismissed these views and carried on with their original intention.
This is the first of many detrimental changes that we are going to see forced through by the governments obsession with the “Red Tape Challenge” that will affect our industry and your business.
