OPS&S announce changes to Conformity Assessment body services in UK

7th Sep 2021

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has announced that it no longer plans to provide commercial Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) services for metrology products under the NMO (National Measurement Office) brand, and that it will be stepping back from the market.

While this move isn’t imminent, it is a significant change for our sector and we now need to work to understand what this means for the legal metrology industry and every one of our members so we can advise you accordingly. The UKWF have a meeting in place with the team at OPS&S next week to gather more information about the changes, and we will of course share the outcome of this meeting plus any guidance and advice with you when we have it.

In the meantime, you can read the statement from OPS&S in full below or visit the NMO Technical Services page for more information…https://www.gov.uk/guidance/product-and-management-system-certification

Statement from OPS&S

Changes to Conformity Assessment Body services

“Since leaving the EU, changes in the broader test house and conformity assessment landscape have made it necessary for the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) to consider the way it operates its statutory and commercial metrology services, in particular its role as a Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) for metrology products.

OPSS will be ending its provision of commercial Conformity Assessment Body (CAB) services under the NMO brand.  This will be a managed exit, ensuring alternative provisions for businesses are in place before stepping back from the market.

OPSS will continue to uphold its statutory metrology services and its place as an expert leader in legal metrology.  Ceasing our CAB commercial services will enable us to focus more on our key areas, increasing our support for local government and UK businesses, both nationally and internationally.”
